I love this book! An earlier reviewer noted problems with this book, and I do not disagree with them. However, I think this book is just what it says: a guide to the Bible. I loved the way he explained many things about the Bible. I had tried to read it many times on my own, but this book is what really helped me actually do it. It is easy to read and understand and he makes wonderful analogies that help explain things. I do not deny that the salvation message is critical--it is. But this book has good things to offer, even if it does not address that issue.

If this is the same edition as the hardback I want to warn readers about this book. I bought the hardback to give to a new believer without much church background and I found out that I cannot give him this book as a gift. The reason is that while this book contains some insights into the different literature and sections of the Bible, it seems to miss the main point that the Bible reveals God and His only way of salvation in Jesus! There is no Messianic prophecy mentioned or no explanation of how Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament (see Luke 24:15, 44). While the author does not deny the reality of Jesus' death and resurrection, he ends up denying the meaning! There is no explanation of how Jesus' death and resurrestion is the ground of our justification and salvation with God. Instead the author summarizes the Bible in these words: "The Bible is a compendium of moral thoughts to nourish moral minds. At least that's my take on it." (page 183). Being moral will never get anyone into heaven nor will we really know Christ (John 17:3) by nourishing our moral mind. And how will we ever have a moral mind unless we are born of the Spirit? (Romans 8:5-9). Christ alone saves, not morality. This is not a book to give to someone if you really want them to know the God of the Bible.
